Mixed Media on #FarmhouseStyleFriday

Probably my most favorite type of work, whether it be purely for #art or #decoration or a fully functional furniture-esque piece, is incorporating mixed media.

Using different elements and materials within a piece of work to create dimensionality and a variety of textures can make amazingly unique and beautiful pieces.

Although 2-dimensional artworks - a beautiful painting on canvas, a well designed print, a lithograph, for example - are #beautiful in their own right, I've always been very strongly drawn to and inspired by those pieces that combine all sorts of elements, creating an interesting, thought-provoking and unique composition.

Mixed media can be simple or complicated (for lack of a better term!) - with neither a bad thing depending on the intention and design of the composition.

One of my favorite places to see mixed media is in the furniture and lighting business. I love the combination in particular of "natural" elements; metals, wood, fabric, rope, twine, and glass. Incorporate at least 3 of these elements and it's hard to not create a beautiful, visually pleasing piece!

Here is an example of a simple composition currently underway; a 3 dimensional wood burning that incorporates 3 different types of wood (pine, oak, and poplar), to give each layer it's own unique look within a cohesive composition. You'll see on the middle piece the grayed out area - we are going to cut out that area with a jigsaw to alleviate the harshness of the 3 straight lines of the wood as they currently sit.

Even more fun will be incorporating different stains to highlight parts of the wood burning, adding dimensionality to an already physically 3-dimensional piece. The challenge is going to be not to overpower it with the stain and take away from the wood burned detail.

Probably the simplest sort of mixed-media work is one of my favorite customizable projects - using stain in a painterly way to create dimension within a flat piece (in this case, a pine round) - I love this look, and these rounds can be made into almost anything; wall-hangings/decor, a simple table round, a lazy susan, a clock, a table top - the possibilities are endless!

Below are two utilization of the variety of stains, both in an artwork and then personalized sign. This technique really gives the pieces a true uniqueness you can't just buy anywhere - and no matter what type of wood is predominant in your house, it's sure to coordinate, with both available to purchase here!

In these #projects I've utilized 4 types of stain: driftwood, golden pecan, red oak and deep walnut. I'm excited to use this technique in upcoming projects, creating a large nature scene on a rectangular piece of wood for a large wall hanging. Stay tuned for this project, as well as a light fixture that will incorporate bourbon barrel staves, metal, glass and rope!

And lastly, #TGIF - enjoy your #weekend!
